DESCRIPTION:The great British Oak is a valued part of our cultural heritage\, a key feature of our unique British countryside and is critically important to our wildlife. \nJim Paine worked for 10 years in international conservation at the UNEP-IUCN World Conservation Monitoring Centre in Cambridge and then established Walnut Trees Nursery in south Norfolk in 1998 with his partner Clare. Jim and Clare went on to establish the Norfolk Nurseries Network\, a non-profit collaboration between enthusiast-driven specialist plant nurseries in Norfolk. \nThis month\, Jim will be looking at the history of the oak\, its cultural and historical heritage and its contribution to our landscapes.

DESCRIPTION:This month’s speaker is Dr Ian Bedford\, who ran the Entomology Dept at the John Innes Centre in Norwich for 42 years. Dr Bedford now works as an independent entomologist\, offering advice in the development and use of non-chemical plant protection products and supporting wildlife-friendly home gardening.  \nDr Bedford holds Plant Bug Clinics and is the ‘Bug Man’ for BBC Radio Norfolk and Suffolk\, so come along with your bug related questions!

DESCRIPTION:Our speaker this month is Andrew Sankey\, who will be giving us an insight into the life and work of Sir William Hooker. \nBorn in Norwich\, Hooker became a renowned botanist\, lecturer and plantsman. He discovered a new moss on Rackheath\, Norwich and after a short time in Halesworth took up the post of Prof of Botany in Glasgow before becoming the first Director of Kew Botanic Gardens in London – his greatest legacy.
